Californians at 2007 Nike Outdoor Nationals

Wow! There were some moments during the 2007 Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina that were the equal of any in the sport in recent years. The huge three day affair lumbers along with a ton of events and levels currently, with a number of the contests featuring marks and special competitive efforts on the all-time lists that were awesome to watch and be apart of if you were there. The video coverage I am sure lends some to the excitement of the moment in the 8:41.55 Boys Two Mile, National Record in the 1600 Medley by the great Roosevelt of Greenbelt Girls who were stars at Arcadia this spring, the Boys Mile that featured sub-4 pace for much of the event, a 2:02.76 800 by Pennsylvania’s Chanelle Price, and a series of events that Golden Staters were prominent in.

Winning here is no very easy task, with efforts in that direction by Californians resulting in some super results!! Cory Primm (Westlake, Westlake Village) filled out his style of racing possibilities in the 800, as here, he came from a controlled position off the lead after the first lap to run down early pace-setter, sub 1:50 star Dylan Ferris (NC), on the way to an awesome nearly even split 1:48.63 800 win, the year’s quickest among preps and among the top ten times ever run by a Californian! La Sierra (Riverside) came back from a seventh place Saturday morning 4x1 mile effort (17:35.94) to a big Distance Medley win at 10:01.79 (#3 AT Californian and #12 AT US), with Dylan Knight, Jared Drinker, Steve Norton, and Spencer Knight making up both squads.  Spencer Knight was quoted by the NSSF's Pete Cava: “We did the 4xMile this morning and we really stunk.” “I mean, coach didn’t even want to talk to us because he was so disappointed in our performance. All day we were talking about what we needed to do.  We all wanted to produce our best times and we lost position, get it back, pace ourselves, and then get it back. We had to remain consistent. It’s so unbelievable to win this, I’m just so happy.”

Reggie Bryant (North, Riverside) showed a ton of heart in the 400 hurdles, with junior William Wynne (Georgia) racing past early on to the home stretch, and the North Riverside soph coming back to almost catch Wynne 50.09-50.10, with Bryant a National Soph Class Record, All-Time California Best, and #9 All-Time US as the result of his effort!! Casey Roche (St. Francis, Mountain View) marked a bit competitive effort over a great National Field in the Vault, clearing 16-07.5 to win over rival Spencer McCorkel of Arkansas (on misses) and group. Conor McCullough (Chaminade, West Hills) drew rave reviews on his future potential among those who viewed the Hammer, with the National Soph Record Holder off a 243-11 earlier in the spring, second here to National Record Holder Walter Henning (New York) 240-11 to 249-00. Henning later was said to indicate to viewers that the young Californian would take out all his records in future years. State High Jump Champ Daniel Kirkpatick (Trabuco Hills) added to his national level credentials with a 6-11 second place effort in a super High Jump field.

On the Girls’ side Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) made up for some cross-country disappointment at the Nike Team Nationals with a squashing of the nation’s best in the 4x1 mile relay, racing 20:23.43 in an effort to take out the 19:56.75 National Record by Suffern, NY from 2006. Hilary May was 5:08, Sarah Cummings a 5:07, junior Allison Damon a 5:06, and junior Shelby Buckley wrapped it up 5:01, as the group won by over ten seconds. The Girls came back with May, Claire Schmidt, Damon, and Buckley racing 11:48.67 for fourth in a quick Distance Medley later in the evening after the Saturday morning 4 x Mile. Sarah Cummings added a 10:38.27 two mile run on Friday evening for CdM. Dominique Jackson (Fairfield) showed determination as she attempted to work with the 27-57-1:28 800 meter pacing of Pennsylvania’s Chanelle Price, with Price racing 2:02.76 and Jackson racing away from the rest of the pack to a 2:05.65 PR for second.

Caitlin Clark (Granite Bay) was a very competitive 4:56.54 in the Mile and Madera frosh Alisha Brown was 4:56.77, with Whitney McGee (Berkeley) 14:41 in the Finals of the “Emerging Elite” 100 Hurdles. Harvard-Westlake did a ton of relay running, with Laura Meadors a super final 800 leg in a 4:07.66 1600 Medley Relay Section win, with 50.54 (400 Re) and 1:47.46 (800 Re) efforts by the group also. Madera had a fine 9:41.32 4x800 Girls run with three underclass athletes, with Alitta Boyd (Moreau, Hayward) adding a fine 39-02.5 in the Triple Jump.

On the Boys’ side, Brad Surh (Carlmont, Belmont) was 4:10.42 in the Mile, with JT Sullivan 4:14.66 there and a part of a fine 17:30.18 4x1 mile group that was fifth earlier in that Saturday action. Central Section stars Jonathan Peterson (Clovis) were 4:13.67 (Section Winner) and Rocky Richardson (Madera) 4:15.81 were strong over four plus laps (mile distance here). Gyasi Rivers (North Hollywood) was 47-00.25 in the Triple Jump.
